Project Gilead: Comprehensive HIV Innovations In La Romana, Dominican Republic

From January 2022 to the end of June 2023, the Family Clinic of La Romana was deeply immersed in developing the “Comprehensive HIV Innovations in La Romana, Dominican Republic” project, funded by the pharmaceutical company Gilead Sciences, Inc.

The primary aim of this initiative was to enhance the health outcomes of individuals living with HIV by providing access to healthcare services and community support.

370 prioritized participants received personalized care from a multidisciplinary team consisting of a social worker, community promoters, a community psychologist, and a navigator. This cohesive team conducted in-home interventions for the prioritized participants, equipping them with tools to bolster their psychological well-being, support medication adherence, and offer education on relevant health and well-being topics, among other valuable interventions.

In addition to the prioritized participants, over 1,400 additional users received mental health support and clinical services at the La Romana Family Clinic as part of the project. Moreover, the initiative extended support to 100 family members of individuals living with HIV through home visits and support groups.

Among other notable achievements, the project successfully integrated adolescents and adults into support groups, motivated them in occupational and academic aspects, and improved participants’ medication adherence and overall physical and mental health.

The La Romana Family Clinic expresses profound gratitude to Gilead Sciences, Inc. for financing this project, significantly enhancing the quality of life for numerous vulnerable individuals in La Romana and the eastern provinces.
