The Central Romana sugar mill has concluded its harvest for the 2022-2023 season, producing 265,735 short tons of sugar after processing 2,379,000 short tons of sugarcane.

In the statement, the company explained that it also produced over 123,000 short tons of refined sugar and approximately 16,426,000 gallons of molasses during the 185-day harvest period.

“While all our workers dedicated themselves to this season, the figures are lower by nearly one million short tons of processed sugarcane compared to the previous harvest due to the severe drought that has affected our fields in the East region and a significant portion of the national agricultural sector,” the company stated.

Despite the aforementioned challenges, Central Romana maintained a manufacturing yield stability of 11.17% and the overall sugar production has continuously met the local market’s demand.

Following the harvest, the agro-industrial company announced that it will pay bonuses totaling RD$920 million to all employees in the agricultural and industrial sectors as part of the salary benefits defined in the Collective Agreement with the United Union of Central Romana Workers. The agreement includes a bonus based on the volume of processed sugarcane.

According to the Collective Agreement, a payment of 35 days of salary would be due this time, as the company cannot export sugar to the United States market. However, the Central Romana Administration has decided to pay 64 days to its workers, almost doubling the amount stipulated in the most recent agreement with the United Union.

“While this represents a financial sacrifice for our company, we want to acknowledge the work and tremendous effort of all our employees during these challenging times,” the company concluded in the press release.
