Since the start of the 2015 Atlantic Hurricane Season on June 1st, activity has been very low -with the formation of only 3 named storms (Ana, Bill and Claudette), none of which turned out to be very threatening. But then suddenly, yesterday, Tuesday, August 18th, Tropical Storm Danny and threatens to become the first hurricane of the season.
Tropical Storm Danny could become a hurricane as soon as tomorrow (Thursday), and while tropical weather is inherently unpredictable, this is what we know so far:
Tropical Storm Danny
- Maximum sustained winds = 85kph
- Moving west at 22kph
- Located 2.325 kilometers East of the Lesser Antilles
Predictions
As with all tropical storms how exactly Tropical Storm Danny will develop and where he will go is unknown, however the following is predicted:
- Could gain strength over the next few days.
- Could become a category 2 hurricane
- Over the next week, Tropical Storm Danny will continue to move due west (towards the Caribbean, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic)
- Tropical Storm Danny may affect Puerto Rico by early next week, potentially as a category 2 hurricane.
What does this mean for the Dominican Republic?
So far there is no clear threat to Dominican Republic, but we must keep abreast of the bulletins on the development of this storm.
Reason to panic?
Certainly not. But we certainly do need to keep an eye on Tropical Storm Danny.
