Humans have a special bond with dogs. Our pets become a part of our family; we love them and want to take care of them in the best way we know how.

An easy way to tell how healthy a dog is is by their shiny coat. Most vets agree that poor nutrition can lead to a dull coat so make sure you’re feeding your best buddy a healthy diet. Here are some great things to keep in mind.

Dog food

First take a look at the dog food you’re using and make sure it doesn’t contain any questionable ingredients. A good dog food contains real meat and protein with few by-products, preservatives and grains especially wheat, corn and soy which (unless organic) are very likely to be genetically modified which can lead to health problems and allergies. Instead choose a food with mostly animal protein and vegetables, oatmeal and rice are better choices for fillers since they tend to produce fewer allergic reactions. Some great brands are Organix and Halo.

Treats

Instead of overly processed treats you could try feeding your pet some sardines or salmon. These are full of omega-3 fatty acids, which can help contribute to a healthy coat and your dog will love them!

Bathing

Over or under bathing can also contribute to a dull coat. How often you bathe your dog really depends on how dirty they get, but a good general guideline is about once a month with a moisturizing shampoo free of parabens, sulphites or chemicals. Brushing at least every other day stimulates the skin and hair follicles, which helps make the coat nice and shiny.

Healthy oils

Adding healthy oil to your dog food can also go a long way when it comes to good health. Most pet stores sell Omega-3 oil in a pump that makes it easy to add to food with instructions on how much to add depending on the size of your dog. I also know many pet owners who swear by the benefits of coconut oil and how it can help clear up allergies and skin conditions. Just a little goes a long way so don’t overdo it – too much can lead to diarrhea.

Pampering

If you want to pamper your pet even further or if they have skin conditions and excessive itching, try an oatmeal bath. Oatmeal contains vitamin E, which works as a natural softener and can soothe itching. Simple grind up a cup of plain oatmeal into a powder and fill a tub with lukewarm water, adding enough oatmeal to turn the water cloudy. Place your dog in the bath and pour water on its head and back avoiding the eyes and gently massaging it into the skin.
