Altos de Chavon Archeology MuseumDid you know that Altos de Chavón, in additional to the acclaimed School of Design, amphiteather, shops, bars, and excellent restaurants, has 3 museums? Altos de Chavón has 3 interesting museums: The Archeology Museum, the Amberworld museum and, the “Choco Museo”, chocolate museum. Today, Sunday May 18th we commemorate International Museum Day, making today the perfect day to get to know the museums of Altos de Chavon.

Museo Arqueológico Regional Altos de Chavón

altos de chavon museum Altos de Chavon Archeology Museum This museum documents the important indigenous heritage of Santo Domingo island (before it was known as Hispaniola, this island was called Santo Domingo). With a superb collection of over 3000 pieces found in the region and collected by Samuel Pión over 40 years. They display, in chronological order, the evolution of the culture of indigenous societies from the pre-agricultural era to the time of the Tainos, the dominant culture on the island when the Spaniards arrived. They host a wide range of activities, such as conferences, temporary exhibitions, research visits to rural areas and different workshops for tour guides. They also have a special “Discover Room” for children, where they hosts kid’s activities, giving them the opportunity to be archaeologists through various educational activities.Altos de Chavon Archeology Museum [nggallery id=1933]

 Museo Mundo de Ambar

amberworldmuseumcasadecampo IMG_3337 In this museum you’ll find a collection of all the different existing types of amber, including a tour of their origin, history and many samples the wonderful jewelry that can be made with it. In the same museum you can also see a small collection on display of larimar, its origin and history. They also have for sale a wide variety of jewelry made with this semiprecious stone. Choco Museo

This museum showcases the origin of cacao, as well as the chocolate manufacturing process. Each visitor can see how chocolate is made from the cacao bean to our mouths! And if you have time you can participate in a workshop and make your own personalized chocolate. In Choco Museum you can taste, for free, different chocolate products.
