In this week’s edition of “This week in the Dominican Republic” we learn about Dominican – Haitian plans to save the environment, a US$600,000 donation to improve Santo Domingo’s infrastructure and another win for Los Tigres baseball team.
Dominican Republic and Haiti agree to save the environment
On Monday of this week, a second round of high level talks between the Dominican Republic and Haiti took place in in the Dominican border town of Jimaní, during which the two countries reached an agreement to take action to protect the environment of the island of Hispaniola, shared by the two nations.
Both ministers of the environment agreed that there is an urgent need to protect Hispaniola’s environment and natural resources – to reduce environmental degradation and losses in biodiversity.
Within this agreement is a plan to create a binational program to study and monitor lake Enriquillo (pictured above) and lake Azuei, which both straddle the Dominican-Haitian border.
US to donate US$600,000 to improve the safety of Santo Domingo’s infrastructure
U.S. ambassador in the Dominican Republic, James Brewster signed an agreement with Roberto Salcedo, National District mayor, which entitles Santo Domingo to a donation of US$600,000, as one of the worlds cities selected for the Climate Resilient Infrastructures Services (CRIS) program, ran by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
The money will be destined to technical assistance to improve the safety of Santo Domingo’s infrastructure, to deal with climate change. Working with community leaders to identify the worst climate risks, as well as seek solutions, the program aims to focus on the most vulnerable populations of Santo Domingo, in the areas closest to the Caribbean sea, as well as along the riverbanks of the Ozama and Isabela rivers.
Dominican Republic advances to semi-finals
Following a victory over Mexico’s Naranjeros 7 – 6 on Wednesday night, the Dominican Republic’s Tigres will now progress to the semi-finals of the Caribbean Baseball series.
The semi-final will be played on the Nueva Esparta Stadium, at Margarita island in Venezuela.
