The greening of interior and urban areas has long been a challenge for architects and urban planners due to the lack of usable space and the under appreciation of vegetation as a positive influence in improving overall living conditions. Vertical gardens – or green walls, were born as a creative way to integrate nature into our environment without having to sacrifice as much square footage as we would with regular gardens – and they’ve just arrived to Casa de Campo!

One of the Bosques Urbanos masterpieces

Bosques Urbanos is a Dominican company that has been developing and installing vertical gardens for the past year. Alejandro (Architect) and Natalia Franch (Interior Designer) are a brother and sister team who grew up with close ties to nature and a strong desire to make it accessible to urban dwellers and plant lovers alike.

They have successfully completed several vertical gardens in Santo Domingo and recently installed their first Casa de Campo garden.

Their hydroponic vertical gardening system uses local materials, geotextiles manufactured from recycled plastic bottles and an automatic and timed irrigation and fertilizing system that requires little maintenance. This method can sustain the largest variety of plant species; more than any other system available.

Bosques Urbanos also manufactures and installs green roofs, natural pools, aquatic gardens and terrariums and offers overall green solutions to anyone who wants to bring a little of the outside in.

Besides the obvious aesthetic qualities they possess, the benefits of having a vertical garden are:

1. The hydroponic drip system they utilize uses water in the most efficient way possible and recycles excess runoff.

2. Since plants grow vertically, there is more air circulating around them, so there is less of a possibility for pests, fungus or disease and therefore no need for chemicals or pesticides.

3. They act as sound buffers in busy areas.

4. They improve air quality inside and outside by naturally filtering pollutants.

5. When installed over an external wall, vertical gardens act as natural insulators, reducing the interior temperature of any building.
