Recently, the National Maths and Science Olympics were celebrated with numerous schools participating in the many different categories – among them, the Abraham Lincoln School, which located in Central Romana in La Romana, was represented by five outstanding students who, once again distinguished themselves as both 1st and 2nd place winners in both the La Romana and easter region finals!!

The annual National Maths Olympics which is normally celebrated in May, just before the end of the school year, featured 3 brilliant students from the Abraham Lincoln School who won 1st place on the La Romana and Eastern region Maths finals in three different categories; Jose Mayans representing grades 5 and 6;  Mariella Matar, grades 9 and 10, and Elianna Alba in the 11th and 12th grade category.

Likewise María José López in grade 12 (who just graduated) and Santa Ramírez in grade 11, who have a great passion for Science, obtained the 1st and 2nd places in the Science competitions, respectively!

Although the Abraham Lincoln School didn’t win the national finals, these wonderful students did an excellent job!! Well done guys! And so Rebecca Hughes, editor of Casa de Campo Living had the opportunity to speak to Elianna Alba, who has now won the competition for the third time and will soon be a proud “12th grader”, as well as María José who has recently graduated from the Abraham Lincoln School with a fabulous GPA!  Here we share a brief interview with the girls:

@cdcliving: How do you feel about the win?
Eliana: I feel quite happy, it’s something that really pumps up college applications.

@cdcliving: After school what do you plan to do next?
Eliana: I want to go to the US or Canada and study Business.

@cdcliving: Art or math? Which do you prefer?
Eliana: It’s hard, I’m good at maths and I like it because it’s logical, but although I’m not so good at art – it helps me relax.

@cdcliving: How did the Abraham Lincoln School help you become so good at math?
Eliana: Mr. Kirman is my maths teacher. We get a lot of practice on each subject and teachers are always willing to spend time explaining whatever one needs how many times one needs it.

@cdcliving: Tell me about your photoshop project – its awesome, what is it for?
Eliana: Vittoria and I have been learning to use and do different things with photoshop with Mr Adams, instead of doing Music or PE and that was one of the things we learned. We’d thought it’d be cool to represent different teenage personalities which you can find in a class, but all being the same two people.

“I was very excited to win the regionals and represent the school. I didn’t believe I could actually win this year! Unfortunately, we didn’t win at national level. The competition was very tight, but I am confident that students from the Abraham Lincoln School will go on to national level next year and do their best to bring that trophy home. This is actually the first time I’ve won the regionals competition. I participated last year, but didn’t make it through.

I will be attending college this fall. Like my classmates, I am very excited about it and I know some exciting things are to come. The Abraham Lincoln School has done an amazing job with their science department. The subjects were hard and the teachers were tough, but it was all worth it. We graduate from the Abraham Lincoln School with the basics necessary to defend ourselves. Mr Wood was my Biology teacher. He is an excellent teacher with a true passion for the subject. I thank him greatly for all of his hard work and help. My parents are a great inspiration to me. They are both extremely hard working and compassionate human beings. Seeing them excel in their professions motivates me to do well in the future. Becoming a doctor has definitely crossed my mind, but I have decided to go to college with an open mind and take all types of courses and classes. I have varied interests so it is important for me not to limit myself. There is an endless spectrum of possibilities out there for me.”

Congratulations to all students and teachers!! Keep it up!!

The Abraham Lincoln School, located within Central Romana, in the town of La Romana, is a private school for the children of employees of the Central Romana Corporation, but is also attended by other children who pay yearly tuition fees

The Abraham Lincoln School is an “English school” which means that classes are taught to a British standard curriculum and all the teachers are British, with the exception of course of the teachers who teach Spanish, Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten and PE who are Dominican. This means that the majority of classes are taught in English and children command both English and Spanish.

Although the curriculum is British, grades are awarded according to the American GPA system and the pupils also take the “Dominican National Exams”, allowing pupils to continue their education at universities in the USA or within the Dominican Republic, as well as in Europe.

Classes go from pre-kinder to 12th grade.
