onno's bar margaritas

onno's bar margaritasAs the most affluent resort and community in the Dominican Republic, it is no surprise that the Casa de Campo resort offers many upscale dining options, but amongst Casa de Campo’s eateries is Onno’s Bar in Altos de Chavón – Casa de Campo’s best nightspot and great place for a casual bite to eat.  Since our favorite Casa de Campo restaurant, Gino In Trastevere closed for the summer, we have been rediscovering the joys of Onno’s Bar – and have found that it’s a fun place to hang out on a Friday or Saturday night! And although our favorite Onno’s Bar treat is cocktails (often the deadly Margaritas) served with a giant bacon and onion pizza, we have now sampled a number of items on their newly updated menu, so here bring you a quick “review” of some of the options:

Fully Loaded Nachos (RD$340)

This one’s off of the “old” menu, but it’s a classic – really good and really popular so no wonder they kept it!

A generous pile of macho nachos with all the right toppings: cheese, refried beans, sour cream, chicken, guacamole, tomatoes and a touch of garlic delight. A delicious and filling appetizer, easily sharable and just what you need when the mood calls for nachos.

Pizza (small from RD$315, large from RD$590)

pizza onno's Ever since we asked YOU our Casa de Campo readers “Where makes the best pizza in Casa de Campo?” and Onno’s Bar came in 2nd with 33% of the votes we just had to give it a try! The first time we sampled Onno’s pizza we washed it down with 2 jugs of Margarita (which is not really a good idea) and the pizza tasted FANTASTIC – we had peperoni, bacon and onion and one with jalapeños – and since then we’ve been back 2 more times for the bacon and onion and even without the margaritas we still like them! In fact one of the most impressive aspects about the pizza at Onno’s is their popularity and loyal number of fans – it seems the Casa de Campo community can’t get enough of them! Click here for the results of our “best pizza in Casa de Campo survey.” Onno’s pizza is also excellent value – a large, from only RD$590 can easily feed 2 if not 3 people – leaving you with plenty of cash for another round of Presidentes….or Margaritas!

Sampler Platter (RD$995)

onnos bar

This is bar food at it’s best. When you are enjoying a few drinks with friends – there is nothing better than occupying your fingers and mouth with some good fried finger food! The Onno’s sampler platter is really as big as it looks – with 4 greedy mouths to feed we surprisingly had no arguments over who got the last piece of fried chicken, because there was plenty to go around! The Onno’s Sampler platter includes; empañadas, chicken wings, nachos, fried chicken, fried fish strips, quesadillas, jalapeño poppers (not for the faint-hearted), croquetas and onion rings.

Thai Shrimp Salad (RD$375)

onno's bar This is not something I would usually order at Onno’s Bar, because let’s be honest – what are you doing in a bar if you want to be “healthy”, but mum wanted to try it so we gave it a go and you know what? – it wasn’t bad. The best part was definitely the shrimp and the sauce – both had great flavors. Mum and dad ate it all!

Lasagne (RD$415)

onno's bar A good typical “American-style” lasagne with lots of sauce.

Mahi Mahi Meunier (RD$595)onno's bar

This Mahi Mahi came with a really delicious and very garlicky sauce and very good and crispy potatoes! I LOVE potatoes – so I would know!

S’mores (RD$475)

s'mores For anyone else who is not American and therefore has no clue what “s’mores” are – they are basically melted marshmallow served with graham crackers and chocolate. And so having had s’mores once before (at Disneyworld) I thought I knew what to expect – I was wrong, Onno’s bar does “make it yourself” s’mores!! You are served up all the ingredients along with a mini gas fire and away you go! I especially enjoyed melting/ burning my marshmallows – it was super fun, although I wouldn’t recommend it if you’ve been on the Margaritas – that would be dangerous!

Margaritas at Onno’s Bar

At Onno’s Bar, Margarita’s are a speciality – served by the glass, “giant” (pictured above) in a jug or as a “coronita” (with a corona beer in it). But be warned whatever you choose they are rather potent (a.k.a deadly)……best served with Onno’s pizza!
