This Sunday the 27th of March, the streets of La Romana will come alive with music, dancing and the banging of drums as the La Romana Carnaval ‘Gran Desfile’ marches it’s way through the streets of La Romana!
The ‘Gran Desfile’ or big parade will begin at 3pm and will weave it’s way around the streets of La Romana in an impressive display of the lively and colorful Dominican culture, expect awe-inspiring costumes, choreographed dances, actors, fire breathing and dancing, traditional Diablos Cajuelos and much more – you’ve not seen a parade until you’ve seen one in the Dominican Republic, it’s really very impressive!!!
During the ‘Gran Desfile’ the different ‘comparsas’ will be judged, so that a prize may be awarded to the ‘best’ comparsa. This year the judges are made up of a large group of well-known personalties from the La Romana community, such as Ricardo Bello President of the Casa de Cultura, Jose Lopez Director of the Central Romana hospital, as well as several other wonderful people, such as me!
This year there will be no reserved seating, spectators will be able to watch the passing show up-close and personal from the sidewalk. However, the judges will be located in the Plaza Lama car park, so if you’re looking for a good place to watch from – head to that area!
