On a recent trip to Jarabacoa, I met a very talented poet in the most unlikely of places. While stopping for gas a man came up to the car asking for money, because, he said, he was trying to publish a book of poetry. Not overly convinced but impressed and amused by his creative way to earn a living, I gave him some pesos, and in exchange I got a small, very crudely printed booklet of his poetry.
The best 20 pesos I ever spent! This man, Domingo Silverio, is actually very talented and in my opinion does actually deserve to get his poetry printed!.
In this series of posts ‘The gas station poet of Jarabacoa’ I will be publishing Domingo’s poems one by one.
‘Te soñé’
Soñé que tu eras mía y que yo era solo tuyo
soñé que eras ave
que me llevabas en su arrullo.
En aquel sueño tu eras la reyna
y yo tu mas fiel servidor
aquel que lo daba todo
por un poco de amor
caminamos en una nube tomados de la mano
como si quisieras que el cielo supiera
lo mucho que nos amamos.
Te soñé tan niña, tan inocente
tan bella como el agua de la fuente
me sentí tan feliz al saber que era tu dueño
pero luego entristesí al descubrir que todo era un sueño.
As the poem is in Spanish, we have attempted to translate it, of course, it is much better appreciated in Espanol, but if that’s not possible, I hope that you can appreciate it, and that all of it’s beauty is not lost.
I dreamt of you
I dreamt that you were mine, and that I was only yours,
I dreamt that you were a dove
that enchanted me with your song.
In this dream you were the queen,
And I your most loyal servant,
he who gave everything,
for a little love,
Walking on a cloud hand in hand,
as if you wanted the sky to know,
just how much we love each other,I dreamt of you so young, so innocent,
So beautiful as water from a spring,
I felt so happy to know that you were mine,
but then was saddened to find it was all a dream.
