It has just been announced that Silvana Tirado de Soto, will be the ‘Madrina’ for the Baseball Team Los Toros del Este.  ‘Madrina’ literally translates as godmother, but in this case means mascot.

In her role as ‘madrina’ Silvana will be present at the opening game of the season, which will be held on Friday the 16th of October, where she will take part in the opening ceremony. During this opening ceremony she will present flowers to the ‘madrina’ of the opposition team, the Estrellas Orientales de San Pedro de Macoris.

As part of the build up to the opening of the baseball season, the Toros are holding a press conference at Casa de Campo this Friday at noon, which Silvana will also be part of.

Silvana is a pupil at the Abraham Lincoln school in La Romana, and aside from now being famous thanks to the Toros, she is also a mathematical genius. Following consecutive wins in the regional and national maths Olympics competition, she has been selected to represent the Dominican Republic in the Ibero-American maths Olympics to be held in Mexico and the Central American and Caribbean Olympics to be held in Colombia.

I was able to do a short interview with Silvana, and this is what she told me about being chosen to be the ‘Madrina de los Toros del Este.’

“I am a big Toros supporter and have been all my life. I grew up here in La Romana and I have been friends with all the Toros supporters since I can remember. My friend Melissa Gill was the ‘madrina’ last year and when I went to watch her in the opening ceremony, it was suggested that I would be the ‘madrina’ the following year.”

The opening ceremony and game will be held on Friday the 16th of October.
