Having just spent the last 4 hours preparing my apartment and office in Altos de Chavón Casa de Campo for the imminent arrival of Hurricane Irene, I return home to the wonderful news that Irene is heading north and may not even become a hurricane after-all…..

Severe Weather Warning: Hurricane Irene, update at 12.30am, Sunday the 21st of August

• It looks like Tropical Storm Irene or Hurricane Irene is heading North! This is wonderful news for Casa de Campo, La Romana, Santo Domingo and all other cities and towns in the Southern area of the Dominican Republic….meaning that these areas are less likely to feel the full “brunt” of the storm.

• Tropical Storm Irene may never even become a Hurricane…according to stormpulse.com, not only is Irene now tracking across the North of the Dominican Republic, but it is also no longer predicted to become a hurricane.

• However, according to updates from the National Hurricane Centre (http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/) and the weather channel (#93), “Tropical Storm Irene continues to strengthen as she crosses Puerto Rico.” According to these 2 sources the storm now has maximum sustained winds of 70mph / 110kph – a Tropical Storm becomes a hurricane once it has maximum sustained winds of over 117kph….so she’s pretty close!!
