Agriculture in the Dominican Republic is the MOST important sector of the Dominican economy in terms of domestic consumption and is the second largest source of employment in the country (second only to the ‘services’ sector – which is mainly based around Tourism) and this week’s ‘Photo of the Week’ is a great candid shot of work in the Dominican Republic’s sugar fields.

Casa de Campo is located in La Romana, on the eastern coast of the Dominican Republic – where the tourism industry is booming, but also located in this area is the Central Romana Sugar Factory, as well as endless sugar fields. The Central Romana Sugar Factory this year closed with a record production on 181,516 tonnes of refined sugar – an achievement which means continuing prosperity for the La Romana area as well as the entire Dominican Republic, as this ensures a continuous sugar supply which creates not only stable markets, but also employment.

In the photo you can see a trailer which is used to transport the raw sugar cane to the train, which then takes it to the factory in La Romana to be processed and turned into sugar.
