This week’s ‘Only in the DR’ photo was contributed by Mario Cantero, one of the owners of OneBurger in Altos de Chavón and was taken in Santo Domingo.

Driving in Santo Domingo is one of the Dominican Republic’s great cultural experiences, until you have driven around Santo Domingo, you cannot truly say that you have lived in or experienced the real ‘DR.’ Just on a short drive about town, you will experience ‘traffic police’ directing traffic against the traffic lights (something that happens in La Romana too), any number of vehicle-hybrids (parts of cars being pulled by horses, half car-half bike creations), as well as the most common phenomenon – the clever/bizarre transport solution (as pictured here.)

For many people in the Dominican Republic their only means of transport are their feet and their mororbikes – which means if you’ve got something to move, you either carry it or you (in whatever way possible) get it onto your motorbike and regardless of how dangerous this may be get it wherever it needs to go! In this photo, you can see what looks like to least 2 men on a bike, carry some shelves, on top of which is balanced a small chest – quiet an impressive feat of determination and balance!

In previous ‘Only in the DR’ posts, we have seen all number of weird and wonderful objects being transported in an endless variety of creative ways, click on the links below for some other examples:
