Only in the DR: A ‘REAL STATE!’

This week’s ‘Only in the DR’ post was sent to me by Philip Silvestri, taken from his mobile phone in Santo Domingo.The photograph shows a Real Estate office called ‘Montesino, Real State.’

Apparently, this is a VERY common Dominican spelling mistake – seemingly the name of the office should have been ‘Montesino, Real Estate,’ but somehow the ‘E’ in estate got lost somewhere – if this is the case I do not think I would be able to trust these people selling my house! Seriously, people who actually OWN a real estate business and they can’t even spell estate? Very dodgy…

However, I am willing to believe that ‘Real State’ is the ‘Dominicanised’ version of Real Estate, so that ‘Real State’ isn’t even meant to be an English word – it’s the Dominican translation for Real Estate. This, in my opinion makes much more sense – surely someone, somewhere would have pointed out this spelling error???

Another (real) example of a ‘Dominicanised’ word:

‘Zafecon’ – the Dominican version of ‘Safe can’ meaning bin.
