Below is the history of this fascinating factory, provided by the Tabacalera de Garcia themselves.

The take-over by Fidel Castro and the subsequent U.S. embargo on Cuba were the start of events that began to challenge Havana’s supremacy in the world of cigars. Former Cuban cigar-makers took their skills and seeds to the Dominican Republic and began producing high-quality premium and super-premium cigars. One of the Cuban cigar-makers that came to the Dominican Republic was Pepe Garcia of the Menendez Garcia family which owned the H. Upmann cigar factory, also makers of Montecristo. Pepe established Tabacalera de Garcia in 1971 in the first Industrial Free Zone of the Dominican Republic located in La Romana. Today the Dominican Republic is the world’s largest exporter of premium handmade cigars. Tabacalera de Garcia, a subsidiary of Altadis USA, is the largest handmade cigar factory in the world and makers of the finest Dominican cigars, unequalled in their quality and consistency.
