Our neighbors at the Altos de Chavón Cultural Center Foundation, have inviteded one and all to the next exhibition at the Gallery in Altos de Chavón – the First Exhibition of Russian Quilting in the Dominican Republic. The exhibition will be starting on February 26th, with an opening cocktail starting at 7:30pm, but will be on display for over a month.
A little more on the Art of Russian Quilting:
Quilting is today one of the best known feminine handicrafts in the world. Similar crafts have developed in Europe; there it’s called patchwork, in the USA quilting, and in Russia, loskoutnoye shitje.
This type of work has deep historical roots. It began with the age-old desire of housewives to give their homes a feeling of comfort and to decorate their clothes. In the 19th century, fabrics were extremely expensive, so no single piece was to be wasted. Old clothes were used for making children’s rag dolls and other toys.
But times change. The crazy quilt was long associated with poverty, but patchwork has become a technique much favored by today’s designers. It has even become a medium of art, with tiny pieces of fabric taking the place of brush and paint.
No one will leave this exhibition unaffected by its charms. Wonder and admiration are visitors’ most powerful emotions. The exhibition features patchwork and rag dolls crafted by talented Russian artists. Seeing how old traditions are interwoven with innovative ideas, you’re sure to experience the special energy of these pieces, which comes from the union of the artists’ creative imagination and the expression of their soul. And like the secrets of the mysterious Russian soul, the imagination of these Russian masters knows no limits.
The exhibition has been organized by the Russian Quilters Association (www.quilters.ru) together with The Altos de Chavón Cultural Center Foundation.
The Association serves to bring together the efforts of master patchwork artisans from all parts of Russia and has organized many international art projects. One of them is before you right now.
En Español: La Primera Exposición de Artesanía de Trocitos de Tela de Rusia en la República Dominicana
La artesanía de trocitos de tela hoy día se considera uno de las conocidas artesanías femeninas en todo el mundo. Artesanías similar se desarrollan en países europeos; allí se llama patchwork, en Norteamérica quilting y en Rusia loskoutnoye shitje.
Este tipo de creación tiene profundas raíces históricas. Se inició con el hecho de que amas de casa siempre buscaban crear un atmósfera de hogar confortable y ornamentar sus vestidos. En el siglo XIX la tela era muy costosa, y por eso no se desperdiciaba nada. Y de la ropa vieja fabricaban a los niños los muñecos de trapo y juguetes.
Pero los tiempos se cambian. Son bien conocidas por todos las condiciones de la vida en pobreza: cada familia pobre tenía la manta de trocitos de tela. Hoy día la manta de trocitos de tela es un elemento utilizado con frecuencia por muchos diseñadores modernos. La artesanía de trocitos de tela se convirtió en una técnica artística. En lugar de colores y pinceles se utilizan trocitos de tela.
Nadie podría salir de esta exposición con pensamientos indiferentes. Las emociones más frecuentes de los espectadores son una fuerte impresión y arrebatamiento. La exposición muestra diversas artesanías de trocitos de tela y muñecos de trapo de talentosos artistas rusas. Usted observará como las tradiciones se entrelazan con ideas innovadoras. Al disfrutar de estas obras Usted sentirá una energía especial de la unión de fantasía creativa y la expresión del alma de las artistas. Y como los secretos del alma rusa misteriosa, la fantasía de estas maestras rusas no tiene límites.
Esta exposición ha sido organizada por la Asociación de Maestros de Artesanía de Trocitos de Tela de Rusia (Russian Quilters Association, www.quilters.ru) junto con la Fundación Centro Cultural Altos de Chavón. La Asociación reúne maestros de toda Rusia y es organizadora de muchos proyectos artísticos internacionales. ¡Y hay aquí frente a Ustedes uno de estos maravillosos proyectos!
