The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show is the world’s biggest boat show in terms of exhibit space sold, with more than 3 million square feet on land and in the water, and it just celebrated its 50th year anniversary.
Held in Ft. Lauderdale, a beautiful coastal Florida city known as the “venice of America” for its intricate and expansive canal system, the city is home to almost 42,000 yachts and 100 marinas and boatyards. In total, over $2 billion dollars worth of superyachts, sport-fishermen, high-performance boats and cruisers can be seen. In addition, diesel and gas engines, outboard motors, generators, electronics, clothing, and other marine-related products are also on display.
Boat shows provide great venues for manufacturers to present the newest additions to their product lines because of the massive influx of boaters visiting. Furthermore, Boat Shows (and usually one to two weeks after them) are the best times to purchase new boats, because manufacturers offer “boat show specials” to incentivise product purchases. Boat makers will go to great lengths to have as many of their boats on display as possible, providing a one-stop-shop for curious boaters. Boat shows are frequented by many from avid boating families, to curious onlookers seeking to spend a day in sunny south florida – drinking beer and looking at boats. Yet they are all united by a common fascination for the water – whether a it is an entire family dressed up in boat shows and fishing shirts with their boats name engraved across it, or the young couple climbing on boats and taking pictures, the unquestionable appeal of marine life gets them down to Ft. Lauderdale to gaze at boats.
