Last Friday the 8th of January, the Altos de Chavon Art Gallery opened it’s doors to showcase a very special art display ‘Drawing on Site and Sight.’ Although, I had understood that the exhibit involved the artists ‘live’ drawing throughout the evening – I was wrong, the artists were in fact displaying samples of their art work which they had been working on over the previous week. It was a great show, buzzing with Altos de Chavon art students and Casa de Campo’s art aficionados, all admiring and puzzling over the eclectic mix of colourful paintings on display. Here Raul Miyar, from the Altos de Chavon School of Art and Design explains to us exactly what the show was about:
The show was a collaboration between 4 master degree students from the New York Academy of Art and 4 Fine Arts students from Altos de Chavon. The NYAA is here in the country for three weeks doing a workshop with their 4 selected students. The first two weeks were here in Chavon, where all 8 students worked together under the instruction of Catherine Howe. The one night display was just a sampling of some of the work done in those two weeks. On the 12th of January, a full-fledged show of the work opened in District & Co. in Santo Domingo. The show will be up for a month.
