From Tuesday the 3rd of May, the FIP (Federation of International Polo) World Cup Play-Offs have been taking place in Casa de Campo and on Tuesday and Wednesday of last week, the players, referees, FIP personel and friends and family joined Casa de Campo’s polo community for a welcome cocktail and a pig-roast dinner before the games began.
On Tuesday evening, the Casa de Campo Polo Club hosted a welcome cocktail for the players (and affiliated others) at the polo fields, where everyone enjoyed an open bar and delicious selection of picadera, which included my favorite polo-snack; platain wrapped in bacon – there is nothing quiet like it and it must be something very popular with polo players, because that is about the only place it is served! Anyway, after a few ‘get to know you’ and ‘welcome’ speeches the guests from Canada and the USA mixed with Casa de Campo’s polo aficionados and shared a few ‘aboot’ jokes….
A great night, which broke the ice for the week’s following events and activities, here are my photos:
The following day, Wednesday the 4th of May, team Guatemala arrived and the teams took part in a round robin of practice games, which was followed by a Pig-Roast dinner, which again took place at the Casa de Campo Polo Club. It was yet again another pleasant evening, in which we planned (or rather I tried to plan) a Cigar Tour to the Tabacalera de Garcia, a night-out at the Casino Diamante Domincus Bayahibe, and a boat ride to Palmilla and by some miracle I actually managed to pull off all 3 events rather successfully – photos will follow soon!
