Hiding in Altos de Chavón, the Dominican Republic’s only artists’ village are many talented artists, who are studying andcreating incredible pieces of art at the Altos de Chavón School of Art and Design. Alexander Lumsden is one of these artists.
Alex first arrived in Altos de Chavón in 2008 to do an Associates Degree in Fine Arts Painting & Illustration, a 2-year course which he recently graduated from, with an impressive GPA of 4.0, in affiliation with the Parson’s School of Design. In a continued effort to improve, learn and develop, Alex has chosen to further his studies at the Altos de Chavón School of Arts and Design with a specialization year in sculpture.
Alex is also one of Altos de Chavón’s artist’s in residence and will be showcasing his latest works in the Altos de Chavon Main Art Gallery, which will be opening on November 11th, with a welcome cocktail starting at 7:30PM.
Here Alex tells us a little about himself:
2010 marks a special point in my life, where I as an artist I have returned to Altos de Chavon to explore the world of sculpture and to get reacquainted with the vibrant culture and history of the Dominican Republic.
My sculptures and paintings are based on working from live models/ direct observation. This brings a freshness and spontaneity that is impossible to capture in any other way – it’s a purely visceral experience.
My journey began 15 years ago, when I at the age of 18 left Sweden. This journey has since taken me to some key locations, which all have widened my gaze in the visual arts. More specifically, my travels have made me understand that exploration is at the core of any artist’s process, to help understanding one’s own origins – which consciously or unconsciously influences your work.
By changing cultural surroundings, one learns so much quicker, as the brain continually seeks out new possibilities and makes new connections. For example, Australia, with its magical surroundings showed me just the possibilities of colour and light. Argentina reaffirmed the true power of art. By contextualizing the major artworks made before, during and after every political turmoil, you clearly see the importance of art in a nation’s heritage. In England and Scotland I saw the great masters. And in the Dominican Republic, without a doubt showed me how a world of art can still feel fresh, relevant, and unafraid of challenging the traditions of the past.
With the Artist in Residence show 11 November, at the Altos de Chavon Art Gallery, I want my sculptures and images to surprise me as much as the spectator. It’s an intriguing experience as it becomes clear that nothing is ever static, everything changes, even the way that you as a person interpret things.
