The La Romana Bayahibe Hotel Association (AHRB) has unveiled its action plan for the «Accessible La Romana Destination» project, which aims to expand inclusive tourism offerings and outline future steps.

Globally, approximately one billion people live with disabilities, representing about 15% of the population, a figure steadily increasing. The project focuses on enhancing accessible supplementary services through effective local community training and a comprehensive strategy. This ensures all visitors can enjoy La Romana’s attractions regardless of their capabilities.

AHRB, in partnership with the Open Doors Organization (ODO), conducted thorough assessments of affiliated hotel facilities. These evaluations covered rooms, restaurants, shops, pools, and beach access, among other areas, to improve accessibility.

Ana García-Sotoca, Executive Director of AHRB, highlighted, «Our hotels meet international accessibility standards, including specific quotas for accessible rooms. Since 2014, we’ve trained staff in essential areas such as respectful treatment of people with disabilities and sign language.»

Collaborating with local tour providers, efforts are underway to adapt tourism activities to better accommodate individuals with disabilities and ensure a comprehensive experience.

In 2018, AHRB partnered with the National Council for the Development and Inclusion of People with Disabilities (CONADIS) to integrate accessibility into sustainable development policies. García-Sotoca added, «Hotels certified with the Blue Flag have had their bathroom and beach facilities audited by CONADIS, meeting international accessibility criteria recognized in the US, Canada, and Europe.»

In conjunction with CONADIS, AHRB supports hotels in hiring people with disabilities through training and consultancy. About 22 individuals with disabilities are employed across destination hotels, and over 300 people have been trained through awareness workshops and education sessions.
