altos de chavon design school Tuesday March 2 the Renata and Peter Winterstein hosted a cocktail to help the School of Design celebrate 25 years of educating Dominican and international students at the Altos de Chavón School of Design. The Altos de Chavón Cultural Center Foundation is a U.S. not-for- profit public charity that has a cultural and educational mission here in the Dominican Republic. The school is on a university level and offers an associate degree, with many students continuing on to Parsons School of Design (now called The New School For Design) in NY. The curriculum is about art and design, and it is design that is  the starter motor for commerce and industry here in the rapidly developing economy of the DR. The two intuitions, Parsons and Chavón, have been affiliated since 1983. More than 60% of the schools  students require sponsorship support to cover their expenses of tuition, lodging, materials, and food while living and studying in Chavón. The evening was planned to raise funds for the scholarship program, in particular to help the many disadvantaged Dominican and the several Haitian students ( whose families suffered in the quake) who are currently enrolled. roy Over 130 people attended the convivial evening. Students served the delicious home made hors d’oeuvres and chatted with guests in Spanish, English, French, German and Italian! One student even speaks Swedish! There was a silent auction of student and faculty works and they sold like hot-cakes, all the money going to the scholarship fund. This is the first of an annual event. It was a truly wonderful evening. Here are my photos of the evening: And here are even more photos of the evening, taken by Raúl Miyar: [nggallery id=302]
