I have to admit that when Bill and Lynne invited us to their house for their Superbowl party I was very excited, despite having very little idea what the Superbowl was! It was the word party that got me hooked….
Of course I knew the Superbowl was something to do with America and an American Sport, but of course being English, in the average conversation if someone says the words ‘super bowl’ you would just thing they were talking about a very nice bowl! It was only after my boyfriend had explained that the game could last over 4 hours that I started to worry about what I’d let myself in for!
So before arriving at the party, I was briefed on the Superbowl, this is what I learnt:
1. It’s American Football
2. It involves running and the number 4.
3. There is a half-time show
4. They will be playing the BEST adverts on American TV (my boyfriend seemed to think this was very exciting)
So, essentially nothing useful.
Whilst at the party I had a fantastic time – talking to the other guests, pretending to be interested in the game, actually being interested in the game, enjoying the adverts (sorry commercials) more than the game (he had good reason to be excited), eating and drinking and generally being merry! It was a great party, with wonderful company, great food and according to the men – it was a good game!
After the game (thanks largely to a very nice man named Jim), I had leant this about the Superbowl:
1. It’s called American Football, but it looks a lot like Rugby.
2. There are computer generated yellow and blue lines to help show how far people have ran? Which somehow relates to getting a touchdown?
3. The actual ball doesn’t have to touchdown for a ‘touchdown’ – the man holding the ball does.
4. ‘Who dat?’
BIG THANKS to Bill and Lynne for inviting us over – I really did have a great time!P.S The team from New Orleans won! Who DAT?
