This Thursday the 28th of April new art exhibit \u2018Artistas en Residencia Primavera\u2019 will be opening in the Altos de Chav\u00f3n art gallery and celebrated with an opening cocktail. (<\/strong><\/span>Informaci\u00f3n<\/span><\/strong> en Espa\u00f1ol debajo.)<\/strong><\/span><\/wp-block><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new exhibit is the combined work of 4 artists; Alexander Lumsden, Stacey Mohammed, Dita Stepanova and Magno Larancuente. Alexander Lumsden and Tracey Mohammed are both Altos de Chavon artists, currently part of the \u2018Artists in Residence\u2019 scheme, which is designed to be an education and cultural exchange between Dominican artists and foreign artists \u2013 so that during their time on the scheme they improve and develop their skills as artists by interacting and learning from other artists of a different cultural background. The other 2 artists involved in the exhibition are Dita Stepanova, who was also an artist in residence a few years ago and Magno Larancuente, the only Dominican artist of the group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With such a varied group of artists, each from such drastically different backgrounds, we can expect some rather different and interesting art on display at this next exhibit!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stacy Mohammed,<\/strong> was born in Trinidad, a native of eastern India, a Muslim convert to the Pentecostal religion, her mother is of mixed heritage and Catholic. Her home and her childhood memories have strong ties to religion, commandments, prayers and the Bible \u2013 always waiting for miracles and transformations. Her move to New York City raised many questions about religion that she had previously adopted, especially about the representation and valuation of women, which from within a new country brought a new perspective. The figures in her recent paintings, acquired in botany, are an attempt to explore the sacred and the silent, and seek a deeper understanding of what faith means to the her.In these paintings Stacy combines observation with flat spaces with the intention to suggest the stillness of the altar and the interior space of contemplative experience. According to Stacey herself, \u201cIn many ways, painting has become my religion, and my commitment to painting has been traced to a commitment to the unknown.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Alexander Lumsden<\/strong>, from Sweden, arrived in Altos de Chavon in 2008, enrolled in the program for two years, graduating in Fine Arts \/ Illustration. His excellent academic performance encouraged his participation in further studies such as the exchange between The New York Academy of Art and Design School under the name of Drawing on Sight + Site. The \u2018Sught and Site\u2019 program brought together four of the top students of each institution to work together for three weeks in Altos de Chavon, the works performed were then presented in the District & Co. Gallery in Santo Domingo. Lumsden, a young tireless traveler, made an exchange year at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in Melbourne Australia, specializing in Spanish language studies at the University of Granada, Spain, and also studied in the Harven School of Ingl\u00e9s, England. His artwork has been exhibited in Sweden, Scotland, Argentina and Santo Domingo. Aside from participating in the Artists in Residence Program in Altos de Chavon, Lumsden has taken a year of specialized independent study of figurative sculpture.

Dita Stepanova<\/strong>, is from Prague, a city where she studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, after which she specialized in Austria, New York and in 2007 participated in the Artists in Residence program in Altos de Chavon. Her work has been exhibited in France, Austria, Germany, Berlin and Stuttgart, in Italy, New York, Dominican Republic, and of course in her native country, where since 2009 she has been part of a permanent exhibit in the hall of the National Museum Modern Art in Prague.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Larancuent Magnus<\/strong>, a Dominican living in New York, he began his art studies in Puerto Rico, and later took courses in drawing and painting at Parsons. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions in the Dominican Republic, Japan, New York. His work is in the collections of Art Contemporary Art Space, Osaka, Japan, Altos de Chavon, Banco BHD, Museo de las Casas Reales, New York City Holiday Inn Hotels and the Museum of Modern Art in Santo Domingo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PRIMAVERA 2011: ARTISTAS EN RESIDENCIA EXPONEN EN<\/strong>
\n LA GALERIA PRINCIPAL ALTOS DE CHAVON<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

La Fundaci\u00f3n Centro Cultural Altos de Chav\u00f3n, se complace en invitarles a su pr\u00f3xima exposici\u00f3n de Artistas en Residencia Primavera 2011 y artistas invitados, el Jueves 28 de Abril, a partir de las 7:30pm en la Galer\u00eda Principal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stacy Mohammed, naci\u00f3 en Trinidad su padre, oriundo del Este de la India, es musulm\u00e1n converso a la religi\u00f3n Pentecostal; su madre trae una herencia mixta del Catolicismo. Su casa y su ni\u00f1ez aportan recuerdos muy vinculados a la religiosidad, mandamientos, oraciones y Biblias, esperando siempre milagros y transformaciones.
\nSu mudanza a la ciudad de Nueva York inicia muchas interrogantes en torno a la religi\u00f3n que adoptaron por la representaci\u00f3n y valoraci\u00f3n de la mujer; por otro lado su nuevo pa\u00eds aparenta una existencia mecanizada. Las figuritas en sus pinturas recientes, adquiridas en la Bot\u00e1nica, son un intento por explorar lo sagrado y el silencio, y tratar de encontrar un entendimiento m\u00e1s profundo de lo que la fe significa para la artista.
\nEn estas pinturas Stacy combina la observaci\u00f3n con espacios planos con la intenci\u00f3n de sugerir la inmovilidad del altar y el espacio interior de las experiencias contemplativas. Seg\u00fan la misma artista afirma, \u201cEn muchas maneras, pintar se ha convertido en mi religi\u00f3n, y mi compromiso con la pintura se ha remontado a un compromiso con lo desconocido.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alexander Lumsden, de nacionalidad sueca, llega a Altos de Chav\u00f3n en 2008 atra\u00eddo por toda la informaci\u00f3n recibida acerca de esta escuela, \u00fanica en El Caribe y se matricula en el programa de dos a\u00f1os, egresando de la carrera de Bellas Artes\/Ilustraci\u00f3n. Su excelente desempe\u00f1o acad\u00e9mico propicia su participaci\u00f3n en diversos estudios adicionales como lo fuera el intercambio entre The New York Academy of Art y La Escuela de Dise\u00f1o bajo el nombre de Drawing on Sight + Site. Esta iniciativa reuni\u00f3 cuatro de los mejores estudiantes de cada instituci\u00f3n para trabajar en colaboraci\u00f3n durante tres semanas en Altos de Chav\u00f3n; las obras realizadas fueron presentadas al final en la Galer\u00eda District & Co. en Santo Domingo. Lumsden, un joven viajero incansable, realiz\u00f3 un a\u00f1o de intercambio en Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT), en Melbourne Australia, estudios especializados de lengua espa\u00f1ola en la Universidad de Granada, Espa\u00f1a; igualmente estuvo en el Harven School of English, en Inglaterra. Aparte de participar en el Programa Artistas en Residencia en Altos de Chav\u00f3n, Lumsden realiza un a\u00f1o de estudios independientes especializados en escultura figurativa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dita Stepanova, viene desde Praga, ciudad donde estudi\u00f3 la Maestr\u00eda en la Academia de Bellas Artes, completando luego estudios especializados en Austria, Nueva York y en 2007 particip\u00f3 en el programa Artistas en Residencia en Altos de Chav\u00f3n. Su obra se ha expuesto en Francia, Austria, Alemania, en las ciudades de Berl\u00edn y Stuttgart, en Italia, Nueva York, Rep\u00fablica Dominicana, y por supuesto en su pa\u00eds natal, donde desde 2009 esta en la sala de exposici\u00f3n permanente del Museo Nacional de Arte Moderno, en Praga.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Magno Larancuente, dominicano radicado en Nueva York, inici\u00f3 sus estudios de arte en Puerto Rico, y m\u00e1s tarde toma cursos de Dibujo y Pintura en Parsons. Ha participado en numerosas exposiciones colectivas en la Rep\u00fablica Dominicana, Jap\u00f3n, Nueva York e igualmente en exposiciones individuales. Su obra se encuentra en las colecciones de arte del Contemporary Art Space, Osaka, Jap\u00f3n, Altos de Chav\u00f3n, Banco BHD, Museo de las Casas Reales, New York City Holiday Inn Hotels y el Museo de Arte Moderno de Santo Domingo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

El Programa de Artistas en Residencia<\/strong>
\nEl programa de Artistas en Residencia tiene como objetivo propiciar un intercambio educativo y cultural entre artistas dominicanos y extranjeros. Pintores, escultores, ceramistas, fot\u00f3grafos, escritores, m\u00fasicos, escultores y arquitectos de diferentes pa\u00edses, viven y trabajan en Altos de Chav\u00f3n por tres meses. Durante este tiempo interact\u00faan con sus contrapartes dominicanas, intercambiando experiencias e ideas en las distintas disciplinas. Este intercambio din\u00e1mico ha logrado introducir cambios en la forma tradicional de trabajar los materiales o de aplicar la t\u00e9cnica en las distintas formas de arte. Los artistas trabajan sus proyectos en espacio propio, y al final de su estada participan en una exposici\u00f3n colectiva en La Galer\u00eda.  Desde el inicio del programa en 1981 Artistas en Residencia ha recibido m\u00e1s de 220 participantes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
