{"id":317924,"date":"2009-12-01T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2009-12-01T04:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/casadecampoliving.com\/explore-la-romanabayahibe-snorkelling-at-isla-catalina\/"},"modified":"2022-10-21T17:49:50","modified_gmt":"2022-10-21T21:49:50","slug":"explore-la-romanabayahibe-snorkelling-at-isla-catalina","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/casadecampoliving.com\/es\/explore-la-romanabayahibe-snorkelling-at-isla-catalina\/","title":{"rendered":"Explore La Romana\/Bayahibe: Snorkelling at Isla Catalina"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/casadecampoliving.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/islandtoursdr09.jpg?ssl=1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/casadecampoliving.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/islandtoursdr09.jpg?resize=538%2C363&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"islandtoursdr09\" class=\"wp-image-8494\" title=\"islandtoursdr09\" height=\"363\" width=\"538\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">On our recent journey of discovery, otherwise known as our \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/casadecampoliving.com\/2009\/11\/press-trip-to-la-romana-bayahibe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">press trip<\/a>\u2018 to various destinations in La Romana and Bayahibe, we discovered a number of interesting places and activities to enjoy \u2013 right here on our doorstep, only just outside our beloved Casa de Campo!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>We visited two different snorkelling areas off the coast of Isla Catalina; La Pared and the Shipwreck of Capitan Kidd.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/casadecampoliving.com\/2009\/11\/press-trip-to-la-romana-bayahibe\/snorkel\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9078\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/casadecampoliving.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/snorkel-300x182-2.jpg?resize=253%2C154&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"snorkel\" class=\"wp-image-9078\" title=\"snorkel\" height=\"154\" width=\"253\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>1. &nbsp;\u2018La Pared\u2019 (or \u2018the wall\u2019) \u2013 a breathtaking experience!<\/strong><br>\nAs the trip was in Spanish, I may not have fully understand the concept of \u2018La Pared\u2019 \u2013 of course I knew it was a wall, but I didn\u2019t understand what kind of wall or where it would be \u2013 until I found it!  Snorkelling along looking at the many fish and pretty coral (more than I\u2019ve seen elsewhere in this country) I found \u2018la pared\u2019, the sea wall \u2013 where the sea bed turns into a cliff and literally plummets into an inky darkness \u2013 I felt like I was in the movie Finding Nemo!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First things first, this is an absolutely STUNNING experience, with beautiful and surprisingly relaxed fish coming up to greet scuba divers and snorkelers alike.  With my limited Spanish, I did not catch the depth of \u2018la pared\u2019, but I am able to confirm that it is deep. Real deep. And a little scary too boot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After enjoying the snorkeling off the coast of Catalina Island, with Casa de Campo Villas just on the horizon \u2013 about 45 minutes after arriving it was time to pack up and get going to our next destination \u2013 Captain Kidd!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p style=\"padding-left: 30px; \"><strong>Final Verdict:<\/strong> Amazing! A MUST see! If you are into snorkeling or scuba diving you simply cannot miss this, it is a unique experience of looking into the depths of the ocean, with the shore just a few meters away.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/casadecampoliving-wp.s3-accelerate.amazonaws.com\/2009\/11\/PirateShip-1.jpg?ssl=1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/casadecampoliving.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/PirateShip-1-300x199-2.jpg?resize=240%2C159&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"PirateShip-1\" class=\"wp-image-9220\" title=\"PirateShip-1\" height=\"159\" width=\"240\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Snorkelling at <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Kidd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2018Capitan Kidd\u2019<\/a><\/strong><strong> <\/strong><strong> \u2013 a 1699 Shipwreck and cannon repository.<\/strong><br>\nThis was probably the most anticipated of stops and yet the most disappointing. From a historical perspective, the Captain Kidd shipwreck is absolutely fascinating and the project to build a living museum around it is even more so. The actual shipwreck itself is remarkably unremarkable. Don\u2019t expect to see an actual boat \u2013 this ship wreck is so old, all that remains are clusters of cannons, which can easily mistaken for rocks if you don\u2019t have someone to point them out to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In all fairness this shipwreck has only relatively recently been discovered and commercialization has not yet happened. Nevertheless, we are confident in saying that \u2018one day\u2019 it will be a fantastic attraction of the Dominican Republic, rich in history and culture. Today however, just skip it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Final Verdict:<\/strong> Skip it\u2026 at least for the next few years.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote><figure><a
