“Aqui to’somos Toros!”: The Dominican Baseball Season Starts Friday!

This post is also available in: Spanish

los toros del esteThis Friday the 14th of October the 2011-2012 Dominican Baseball Season opens in La Romana town, home of the “Toros del Este” the “Campeones Nacionales 2011.” The celebration kickstarts with the inauguration celebration complete with parade and fireworks, as well as the first of many games between local La Romana team “Los Toros del Este” and “Las Estrellas Orientales” from San Pedro de Macorís.

The inauguration will begin at 7.30pm with the entrance of Jessika Santana, this year’s “Madrina” (godmother/mascot) for the “Toros del Este” local La Romana baseball team, who will present flowers to the “Madrina” of the opposing team “Las Estrellas Orientales” and thus start the Dominican Baseball Season 2011…..this may well be accompanied by fireworks, screaming, singing and the rhythmic banging of plastic bottles….

Following the inauguration the first game of the season will begin, no doubt to passionate cries of:

‘‘Aqui no hay Estrellistas…Aqui to’somos Toros!’’

(Here there are no Estrellas…here we are all Toros!)

Last year, for only the 2nd time in their 28 year history “Los Toros del Este” were crowned the champions of the Dominican Baseball League – let’s hope they win again this year!
