A First! – Women’s International Polo Tournament

This post is also available in: Spanish

This November, an incredible roster that will include some of the most athletically “fit” women in the world will visit the Casa de Campo Equestrian Center to participate in the First Women’s International Polo Tournament, from Monday the 17th through Friday the 22nd, 2008.
Polo is not new to Casa, we have been hosting tournaments since the early 1970’s, when Prince Maharajah Jabar Singh of India brought the sport to our legendary resort. And needless to say since that time, we see it at its best each year on any of the three polo fields. Each season we see a parade of world class players from Latin America, Europe and the US that come to Casa de Campo to play polo in the winter and enjoy tournament play from February through April.

This November’s event will be the first polo tournament for women played in the Dominican Republic and it will be an international qualifying tournament, too – attracting some of the sports top female competitors. All players will be rated since the match will serve as a World Class Tour qualifying event.

Tania Evans, the organizer qualifies the sport as “Very intense, which is what makes the sport so attractive to both men and women. You have to have strong arms, legs, back muscles. You need to ride a few years before you can safely play. It’s an exhilarating sport and great to watch, too.”

For all of us spectators and horse lovers, matches will be played in the afternoons until dusk, and we all know the great time everyone has at the main tent and bleachers. Don’t forget to drop by and enjoy few drinks, snacks will also be served during each match.
