The first El Ser Libre y Feliz International Golf Open charity event was held at the Dye Fore golf course, Casa de Campo Resort & Villas to benefit the Special Education School Father Sebastian Cavalotto (Escuela de Educación Especial Padre Sebastián Cavalotto) where there are more than 200 students with disabilities. Andrés Vélez Cordero, president of the Association El Ser Libre Y Feliz said: “This institution seeks to help these young people to live a productive and independent life, and raise their self-esteem, which in turn creates an atmosphere of acceptance and respect in their environment.”
The award ceremony was led by sports journalist Felix Olivo, and Ruth Fernández on behalf of the United Nations Development Programme (PNUD) who said, “For PUND it is of the utmost importance that people with disabilities can access the employment market and have an independent life and accessible, inclusive and quality education from childhood. Associations such as El Ser Libre y Feliz with activities like this tournament are necessary to achieve this goal.” In the ceremony held at La Casita Restaurant, La Marina Casa de Campo, Dr. Manuel Ramon Canela Escano “Master of Gynecology and Obstetrics in Latin American” was honored for his great contributions to science, society and golf. Also recognized was Ms. Begdy Belén for her dedication and hard work as the Director of the School.
During the awards ceremony there was also a tribute to the recently deceased romanense golfer Homero Saviñón, one of the most enthusiastic players and promoters of this sport in this province; Ms. Elena Landoc who worked as a janitor Cavalotto school and Mr. Jose Manuel Tejeiro, psychologist, who committed himself to the school and the pilot project Escuela de Educación Especial Padre Sebastián Cavalotto by the association El Ser Libre y Feliz.
Former Major League player, George Bell won the best score ‘Gross’ of the contest in category A, ending the day with a total of 35 points. Also, the best net score in that category went to Ramón Reyes with 37 points, followed by César Rodríguez, 35 and Adam Saviñón, 33. In the B division, Kevin Rodríguez won the best score ‘Gross’ with 32 points; while Osvaldo Martínez achieved the highest net score category with 44 points, followed by Abel González and Valentín Martínez, both tied with 40. Mary Ledesma, who finished with 40 points, won the most outstanding lady in the international tournament. Trophies to the winners were presented by a group of children from school and Khayssy Cruz on behalf of the National Council on disability (CONADIS), entity of the state which watches all regulations for people with disabilities.
Addressing those present at the closing, Vélez Cordero, president of the Association, thanked the support and commitment of each and every one of the people who “have had to something to do with the making of our first tournament, which we intend to institutionalize and organize every year.”
