This past weekend, local La Romana charity, the Fundación MIR hosted their 21st annual fundraising weekend in Casa de Campo; the Magical Splendor For Life event.
In a break from tradition, the principle event; the gala and fashion show, which in the past has always been enjoyed as the Saturday night finale, was this year was celebrated on the Friday evening at Minitas Beach, followed by the golf tournament at the La Romana Country Club and a sophisticated VIP dinner and prize-giving celebration at the Fanjul’s Casa de Campo estate on the Saturday.
Being one of the Fundación MIR’s main fundraising events, we will be publishing a series of articles with many more photos – but for now here we bring you an overview of all the glitz and glamor:
From 8pm on Friday the 27th of January 2012, glamorous national and international guests arrived to Minitas Beach along a candle lit pathway through the sand and were greeted by cocktails at the Coco Mar bar, where they were able to purchase Tiffany’s Boxes from the “Mysterious Tiffany Wall.” During dinner, guests were welcomed by Lian Fanjul de Azqueta, founder and president of the Fundación MIR with daughter, Lyanne Azqueta, director of the foundation, who together with the help of a group of children from the Fundación MIR schools demonstrated their appreciation for everyone’s continued support.
As dinner was served, mistress of ceremonies, former Miss Universe Dayanara Torres introduced the spectacular Badgley Mischka fashion show with special guest model, Miss Dominican Republic, Dalia Fernandez, which featured the designer’s latest creations, including floor-length couture gowns, as well as some more casual “resort-wear” items. At the end of the show, Mark Badgley and James Mischka, the partnership behind the label took to the runway to rapturous applause from the audience.
Immeadiatley following the fashion show, the runway magically converted into a dance floor and guests were surprised by the appearance of a live Dominican merengue band, who had everyone on their feet, dancing to the contagious latin rhythms. And to end a fantastic evening, DJ Gringo from Miami kept the dance floor pumping with a mix of party tunes!
Perhaps a little worse for wear following the “exertions” of the previous evening, more than 50 golfers and Fundación MIR supporters gathered at the La Romana Country Club, where the golf tournament teed off at 1pm.
The Magical Splendor for Life: VIP Dinner and Awards Ceremony
This magical ‘by-invite-only’ event, hosted at the Fanjul family’s Casa de Campo estate, Casa Grande, was attended by special friends of the Fundación MIR, VIP guests of the main gala event, designers, Badgley Mischka, as well as prize-winning golfers. A more intimate gathering, guests were given the opportunity to peruse (and shop) at the Badgley Mischka boutique, whilst enjoying the pre-dinner cocktail and during dinner a prize-giving ceremony for the golf tournament took place.
As new friends of the Fundación MIR, beauty queens, Dayanara Torres, Miss Universe 1993 and the current Miss Dominican Republic, Dalia Fernández took a tour of the Fundación MIR’s schools; the MIR Esperanza (the boys vocational school), and the Escuela Tecnica Vocacional Fundacion MIR (the girls vocational school).
