Tennis is making a comeback in Casa de Campo and it’s stronger than ever! This weekend, La Terraza Tennis Center will be hosting a Children’s Tennis Tournament and next weekend it will hold the second competition of the year for Team Tenis RD. Team Tennis has its origins in the United States when the professional league was founded by Larry King, Dennis Murphy, Fred Barman, and Jordan Kaiser in the year 1973 under the name, World Team Tennis.

In the Dominican Republic, the league began in 2014 with the main goal of regaining the competitive spirit among clubs by replicating the model used in the USA. The Team Tenis RD league, based in Santo Domingo, plays using a doubles format and each team participates with 24 players (22 in the women’s division). These teams are separated into four categories to compete against other clubs or teams; among which include: Santo Domingo Country Club, Santo Domingo Tennis Club, Club Naco, Club Arroyo Hondo, Team Las Praderas, Centro Olímpico, Club Banreservas, Unión de tenistas del centro olímpico (UTECO), Club Dominican Fiesta, and others.
Since 2014, each of the four stages were celebrated with great success in the country’s main tennis clubs. Previous years champions include the Santo Domingo Country Club (2014, 2015) and Club Naco (2016). Team Tenis RD 2017 is the 4th year for the annual tournament; and so far approximately 300 players have participated in the first stage, all between the ages of 21 to 60 years old.
Team Tenis RD, which had been dominated by men, incorporated a female division officially for the FIRST time this year on March 4th and 5th in the first stage of the competition! And guess who was a part of the winning female team?! None other than our tennis-loving community member, Idarmis Velázquez!! Having won several of Casa de Campo’s tournaments over the years, she proudly is a part of Team Tenis RD and will play in its second stage along with community members, Magdalena Cavazos and Mirtha De Marchena next weekend on June 10th and 11th.
Hosting Team Tenis RD in Casa de Campo is something that is said was long awaited for and was just confirmed last month. The tournament that will play at La Terraza Tennis Center will definitely be a very exciting competition to watch. We hope you all will go out and support the amazing players participating! The 3rd stage will follow on August 12th and 13th, with the final stage on November 4th and 5th, both at the Santo Domingo Country Club.
