On Saturday December 10th, the “Fundación Dominicana de Estudios Marinos” (Dominican Foundation for Marine Research), otherwise known as Fundemar, in conjunction with the La Romana – Bayahibe Tourism Cluster and the La Romana – Bayahibe Hotels Association, will celebrate the 5th annual Lionfish Tournament. With the aim of organizing a massive Lionfish capture, it promotes its consumption and the awareness of the danger Lionfish represent to our reefs.

Lionfish are carnivores that feed on small crustaceans and fish, and breed very quickly. Since they are not native to our waters, they have very few predators and is the reason the lionfish tournament takes place. Its aim is to stop the spread of the invasive lionfish species in the Caribbean, and to prevent the loss of biodiversity that accompanies their presence. It consists of hunting as many lionfish in the area as possible. Boats may depart from 7 am, but must return no later than 4 pm to be considered in the competition. There are prizes in a number of different categories, and after a day of hunting, all participants get together with members of the community to eat the catch!

Take a look at the following facts, so you can learn more about the negative impacts of Lionfish in our Caribbean waters:

LIONFISH FACTS

• A lionfish can eat up to 20 fish in less than 30 minutes

• Can extinguish 80% of the native fish in very little time

• Lays between 15,000 and 20,000 eggs 3 times a month (that’s around 45,000 eggs every month)

Fundemar’s past annual tournaments have seen more than 500 Lionish eliminated from local waters by more than 40 participants, made of both local community members and visitors. Thanks to this annual event, there are 2,000 less Lionfish in our reefs. The event also serves as motivation to continue capturing and consuming Lionfish throughout the year, regulating its presence in our reefs. With your help, we can make this year’s tournament the most successful one yet and put a stop to the Lionfish threat!
