Memories of Casa de Campo – the Altos de Chavon amphitheater

from amphitheater view to ColinaBack again, by popular demand, Carol Burke brings us her memories of the Altos de Chavon Amphitheater.

Altos amphitheater walkersI lived at Colina 2  for six years.  This house is located directly behind the amphitheater.  The back garden of the house is a lawn, then a bamboo ‘forest’ and the ‘ancient ruins’ — the columns you can see from the amphitheater.  The amphitheater was, in a way, my next door neighbor.

I went for many walks around the amphitheater during the years I lived there, and I observed it in all different weather conditions as well as hearing the sounds from all the performances.  During the day we often went there for exercise – walking up and down the stairs.

schoolchildren visiting amphitheaterThe amphitheater always had something happening during the day too.  School kids from around the country came to visit,  and many other people were there all day long. There was always at least one group of musicians and a few tourist guides, as well as visitors from all over the world.  It was one of the gathering places in Altos de Chavon.
