Get to know the new Artists in Residence of the Davidoff Art Initiative at Casa Quien

The participating artists in the 2018 Artists in Residence program of the Davidoff Art Initiative will be introduced on January 25th at Casa Quien in Santo Domingo.  Mimi Cherono Ng’ok, Candice Lin, Jan Peter Hammer, and Paul Maheke, who will be joined by Artishock Revista founder and editor, Alejandra Villasmil and artist-curator, Christopher K. Ho will be staying in Altos de Chavón until April.

The Davidoff Art Initiative and Residency provides participants with many opportunities to connect with the Dominican cultural community and other residents of Altos de Chavón, at the same time as they pursue their own work. Each participant takes the opportunity to work on and strengthen their skills, sculpture, installation, performance, photography and video, among others, participating actively in the social and cultural fabric of the Dominican Republic.

The group of Artists in Residence 2018 complements and bases their approach in the Fine Arts program of Chavón School of Design, offering students the opportunity to conduct research on these genres with their respective artists. With Altos de Chavón being the artist’s village, we are sure they’ll be able to find inspiration and inspire everywhere they go! We look forward to watching them achieve a new vision and perspective and sharing it with the Casa community.

We already know a bit about their backgrounds, but this is the perfect opportunity to meet and greet the artists, learn about their work, and hear what they aspire to accomplish during their time here. So if you are in Santo Domingo next Thursday, January 25th, don’t forget to stop by!

ABOUT THE DAVIDOFF ART INITIATIVE RESIDENCY

Davidoff Art Initiative logoThe centerpiece of the Davidoff Art Initiative is the Davidoff Art Residency.

Each year, the Davidoff Art Residency offers residency positions for Caribbean artists who participate in five artist-residency programs worldwide, as well as for approximately five artists from outside the Caribbean region who spend three months in the Dominican Republic. A limited number of positions are also reserved for curators and writers working on projects of relevance to Caribbean art.

Artist residency programs help working artists develop their skills, make connections within global networks, earn exposure for their work, and share their expertise with others. In offering emerging and mid-career artists an opportunity to spend an extended period of time working in a different social and creative environment from their own, the Davidoff Art Residency serves as a conduit for professional mobility, cultural immersion, and creative exchange.
