Sugar_golf_tournament_1The 30th annual Casa de Campo Sugar golf tournament hosted by “Alfy” Alfonso Fanjul was played in Casa de Campo from Wednesday the 25th to Saturday the 28th of March with more than 400 international golfers teeing off around Casa de Campo’s world-famous golf courses.

Sugar_Golf_Tournament_2This year, the prestigious and highly competitive tournament was won by Ramon Oyarzun & Augustin Arellano.

Every year the “Casa de Campo Sugar” tournaments take place in Casa de Campo to raise funds for the Fundación MIR charity, who run 3 schools in La Romana with more than 1200 students. The annual event consists of the Casa de Campo Sugar Golf Tournament headed by Alfy Fanjul, the MIR Bazaar and ladies luncheon hosted by Lian Fanjul de Azqueta [click here for photos], as well as the Casa de Campo Sugar Shooting Tournament headed by J.Pepe Fanjul, scheduled to take place from the 21st to the 26th of April.

As is the tradition, the welcome event for the Casa de Campo Sugar golf tournament was hosted by Benetti Yachts with IB Nautica. This elegant cocktail celebration was this year celebrated on the Paseo del Mar under a beautiful starlit sky. (Click here for photos and to read more about the welcome cocktail hosted by Benetti.)

While the more than 400 golfers played practice rounds on Wednesday and Thursday the 25th and 26th of March, it wasn’t until the evening of March 26th at the dinner hosted by Raysa and Alfy Fanjul at Casa Grande that the tournament pairs were decided and the tournament rounds were played on Friday and Saturday the 27th and 28th of March. The lady golfers teed off around the Links and the Dye Fore course, while the gentlemen played on the Teeth of the Dog and the La Romana Country Club golf courses.

Once again taking part in the annual celebration was Pete Dye, designer of Casa de Campo’s celebrated golf courses; the Teeth of the Dog, Links and Dye Fore, who is also currently over seeing the construction of the new driving range (click here to read about that). Accompanying Pete Dye was his wife Alice Dye, who were happy to meet Rafael Torres, President Casa de Campo resort, during the tournament festivities.

At the end of the Casa de Campo Sugar golf tournament, the golfers celebrated with a dinner-dance at the La Romana Country Club in Casa de Campo.
