This Saturday the 12th of December, Mr and Mrs Roberto Weill hosted a dinner party to welcome major league baseball personalities – in honour of the opening of a new Latino Baseball Hall of Fame.

The Latino Baseball Hall of Fame is a new project being led by Roberto Wiell, who’s aim is to celebrate the achievements of  hispanic and Caribbean Major League Baseball players – who are largely absent from the National Baseball Hall of Fame in New York.

The dinner party which was held at the Wiell’s stunning Casa de Campo villa was an elegant affair, attended by many of Casa de Campo’s most well-known personalities, as well as the Lation Baseball legends; Mr. Tom Lasorda, Mr. Lou Melendez, Mr. Rafael Avila, who are supporting the new Latino Hall of Fame, and for whom the dinner was held.

The Latino Baseball Hall of Fame will be built in the artist’s village of Altos de Chavon in Casa de Campo – the perfect location for such a prestigious project, especially given that the Dominic Republic has produced so many outstanding Baseball players. The inauguration of the Latino Hall of Fame is slated to take place in May 2010 and will include the induction of the first players to be honoured.

Weill indicated the project will encompass many aspects, such as tours to the 30 Major League training camps where top baseball prospects from all over Latin America train and play the most relevant Dominican Summer League. Additional attractions will be the different “Invitational Hall of Fame Sports Tournaments” comprising all Casa de Campo sports disciplines such as golf, tennis, polo, shooting and sailing. Baseball clinics will also be incorporated. In essence a full marketing concept to promote Latino baseball and our country.

The following quote was taken from the website ‘Dominican Sports News,’ which describes how Latino Baseball players will be chosen to be honoured in the Latino Baseball Hall of Fame.

“Every year, proposals will be submitted 40 players from four Caribbean countries with a high level of baseball such as Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Mexico and Puerto Rico. Each country put 10 players to be nominated as follows: three in the league in each country, three by the Association of Sports Writers, and three by the Federation of Baseball Players in each country. The tenth is voted on by the selection committee and the fans on the website of Hall, “Avila said.

“Then the committee will select 12 players, three from each country, and submit to the office of Major League Baseball, Lou Melendez where final approval is given,” added Avila.

Casa de Campo is so fortunate to have such a visionary as is Mr. Roberto Weil within it’s residents.

I wish him the best of luck with this project and the same success the Feria de Andalucia en el Caribe has had!

    Hugs from Puerto Plata!
