La Tabacelera Garcia now offers factory tours to all in Casa de Campo!
The Tabacalera de García, cigar factory in La Romana, is now offering free tours to guests of the Casa de Campo hotel, tourists from the Cruise ships and of course to Casa de Campo Living readers!
The Tabacalera de García is the largest hand-made cigar factory in the world, employing more than 3,700 people, and it’s located right here – just outside of Casa de Campo in the free zone. The Tabacalera de Garcia is home to the makers of the Finest Dominican Cigars: Montecristo, Romeo y Julieta, H. Upmann, Don Diego, Santa Damiana, VegaFina, and Onyx amongst others – on this tour you will see the proud handwork of the cigar industry’s most experienced craftsmen and women.
I was recently invited to take part in one of these tours and I must say it is a very interesting experience – you are lead through the Cigar-making process step by step, from the processing and preparation of the wrappers when they first arrive, through to the blending of the different leaves, which create each unique cigar and of course the rolling of the cigar. The process is actually much more complex and precise that you would expect – and involves much more than the few stages I have just described!
What I found most fascinating was that each cigar box is totally handmade -the wood is cut and glued together by hand and then the labels are cut and glued on separately – almost like preparing a christmas gift! In fact every stage of the entire cigar making process is done by hand and it is absolutely fascinating to watch – this must be one of the only factories of it’s kind in the world – where traditional processes are maintained to insure real classic quality.
The Cigar Factory Tour is available Mondays to Fridays, between 8 am and 4 pm, but is by appointment only. To book call: 809-556-2127 or email cigartour@tabacasa.com
The Casa Montecristo Cigar Shop & Lounge is open daily from 8 am – 8 pm, in Altos de Chavon.
Here are some of my photos of when I did this tour ( I didn’t want to publish too many – because you should go see the factory for yourselves!)
