The Sugar Open 2009 – Opening Cocktails at The Victory club

The Sugar Open, the by invitation only golf tournament, in aid of the MIR foundation was held this weekend, from Wednesday the 1st of April through to Saturday the 4th of April. The shooting section of this tournament the Sugar Shooting tournament will take place from the 22nd to the 26th of April.
The tournament was officially opened on Wednesday with opening cocktails held at the Victory Club in the Casa de Campo marina. The event which was sponsored by Azimut Yachts and Los Altos, with rum provided by Ron Atlantico was a sophisticated soiree – packed full with over 200 of Casa de Campo’s VIP’s and well-known personalities, dressed to impress and having a wonderful time enjoying the complimentary champagne and rum cocktails!
On the Thursday evening participants and their partners were invited to a dinner hosted by the Fanjul family in their magnificent Casa de Campo villa, Casa Grande, before the tournament proper began on the Friday.
Following a successful days play on Casa de Campo’s famous Teeth of the Dog golf course, the Bunster family hosted a spectacular dinner at their Casa de Camo villa, where the food was served by Mr. Gonzalez-Bunster himself, who was dressed up in a complete chef’s outfit! The party finished around midnight as players headed home eager to get a good nights rest ready for the final day of the competition on Saturday.
The weekend culminated in a prize-giving dinner on the Saturday evening, which was held at the La Romana country club, in Casa de Campo.
The Sugar Golf Tournament, originally just another golf tournament, was won in 1990 by Alfie Fanjul, who subsequently donated his winnings to his sister, Lian Fanjul de Azqueta to use as seed money to found Casa de Paz. Since then the tournament now know as the Sugar Open incorporates a golf and a shooting tournament, the golf headed by Alfie Fanjul, the shooting headed by his brother Pepe Fanjul, with proceeds going to the charity their sister founded in 1990, the Fundacion MIR.
The Fundacion MIR, is a non-profit organization that works to supply the Dominican Republic’s most marginalized people with a variety of life-altering services. The MIR foundation has three on-going projects – Casa de Paz/La Romana AIDS clinic, Escuela Técnico Vocacional MIR and Campo Nueva Esperanza / Centro Promocional Rural (CPR) MIR Esperanza all of which provide housing, medical assistance, and education to the people in our community living with HIV.
